We do our best - but we’re only human !

However extraordinary it may seem it now appears that by law we have to employ human beings. Although I think we have some of the best employees around , please do not expect the impossible. I hope that we get things right 99% of the time , but even if we do that means that out of all the customers we serve a few are bound to be disappointed in one way or another.

Its really important not just for yourself , but for future customers that you tell us if there is any problem at all. Please help us to improve the service we deliver by being open about any concerns you have with any purchase you have made.If you do not communicate the problem we are unable to resolve it. Take a look at these beauties!

We have sourced two models of reproduction Antique Cueracks made by time served craftsmen in the UK. These are every bit as good as any antique cuerack that you might have been seeking. They are available in both Oak and Mahogany and being a bespoke item that is made to order they can be stained to any finish that the customer requires. They are available as either a 21 or 12 cue rack. Regardless , the finish of these products befits the time and effort put into their creation. In simple terms they are quite outstanding.

We have just delivered a full size (21 clip) rack to a customer in Woking who required the cloth inserts to be in Purple. As always we were happy to oblige as these products are made to order and are truly individual in every way.

If you are looking for the perfect present , or to finish a Games room properly these are the ideal gift!

Full details are now available on our website under cueracks.

Melbourne Inman - Character & Billiards Champ

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

Melbourne Inman was born on the 15th July 1878 and was one of the most famous Billiards professionals of the early part of the last century. He was born into a Billiards mad family with his father , two brothers and three uncles all having made century breaks. He started his career as a Billiards marker at a club in Twickenham.

He was by all accounts a great character and one of the best known players to earn his living on the green baize. He won his first championship in 1908 and from then until 1920 was at the height of his powers. During this time he won the Championship five times and only Harry Stevenson managed to take three titles from him durng these years.

One of the reasons for his popularity was his larger than life image (and nose) which was regularly caricatured by Tom Webster , sporting cartoonist of the Daily Mail.

Inman was always immaculately dressed and he had immense presence. This was always exemplified by the manner in which he would enter a Billiard Hall or upon his entrance to a match where he would always look the crowd up and down as if to decide whether they were worthy of witnessing his special skills.

He was also famed for the manner in which he could intimidate his opponents during the game itself. Inman by nature was a slow , tactical and defensive player. He had a habit of moving about whilst the balls were rolling which may have been due to immense levels of concentration but was more likely a clever form of gamesmanship.

One of his adversaries was Tom Reece and he made a point of annoying Tom who was often in a foul mood at the table. On one particular occasion Inman was in play and required only another 20 points in the session. Reece was so annoyed that he walked out of the match hall , put his cue away and his jacket on. At that point having watched Reece’s departure, Inman broke down on a very simple winning hazard. Reece then had to remove his jacket , take out his cue and go back to the table to make the stroke , which carried onto be a break of more than 100. The relationship between these players was rarely cordial.

Inman was most famously one of the contestants at 1919 Championship held at the magnificent Thurston’s Hall in Leicester Square. This was the first post war championship and as such caused great excitement. The hall was fully booked for all of the five competition weeks. The heats were decided over 8000 points and there were two sessions each day for six days. The final 16000 points were played over 24 sessions. For each heat the table was recovered with the finest quality “West Of England” cloth either a “Strachan No 5″ or a “Hunt & Winterbottom” “E” quality cloth.

The final was played on a Burroughes & Watts match table and quite a number of eyebrows were raised when competitors of Thurston’s erected a match table for the finals. The Billiards Association and Control Council were adamant that no table makers nameplates were fixed to the tables , but it was not a well kept secret. No doubt the Senior management in Thurston’s were furious at this slight.

The championship contained some excellent players. Harry Stevenson , Tom Reece , Claude Faulkiner and Tom Newman all attended. However all these players were overcome by the irrepressible Inman who won the Championship in some style. The publicity in the national press was huge and the reputation of Melbourne Inman was made. The referee in the final was the famous referee Sam Mussabini and the marker was the skilful and well known Charles Chambers.
