1. Steve Davis was regarded as a dead cert in the 1982 World Championship. In what many regard as the biggest shock in Snooker history he was thrashed by Tony Knowles 10-1

2. In 2000 only 12 months after winning at The Crucible for the seventh time , Stephen Hendry lost to Stuart Bingham , a journeyman from Basildon.

3. Defending the title he won by beating Steve Davis 18-17 on the black . Dennis Taylor suffered a 10-6 first round defeat by Mike Hallett in 1986.

4. John Parrott made a flawless start to his defence in 1992 , destroying Eddie Charlton 10-0. It remains the only Crucible whitewash!

5. Ronnie O Sullivan knew he was up against it when playing Stephen Maguire the reigning UK champion. He won 10-9 from being 9-7 down having recovered from within a ball of defeat in the 17th frame.
